What's the harm? They rarely last more than a few months, anyway...

Celebraties rarely pick a mate that they would be able to spend a lifetime with which picking the right mate that you will spend your whole life with is the whole concept of marriage, look at Britney Spears for example.

Just to note the base concept of marriage is lifelong partnership with another person, but the difference between the liberal and conservative views is whether you can marry one of the same or a different gender.

Point taken, but my last post in this thread was half meant as a joke.

Well, let's look at this: What is the point of marriage?

Some say it's a special bond between two people who love each other (I would disregard gender here; love is love. If you're willing to spend your life with them because you love them, than you should be allowed to marry no matter if you're the same gender).

But really, the main point is this: reproduction. You need a male and a female to carry on the species, so any 'normal' person would see two people who are of the same gender in love would, by human instinct, see it as 'wrong'. Why? Because two people of the same gender can't procreate.

This would be a problem, understandably, if the human race was dying out and there were only a few thousand left on the planet. But that's not the case.
So, considering that, there's no real reason why gays should not be allowed to marry when there's obviously no real reason to keep them from marrying, especially if you agree that marriage is (in these days) something done out of life-long love for another.

I think the divorce rate in America would go down if gay marriage was allowed, and more people would be happy. Seriously, most divorces are heterosexual relationships, aren't they? And isn't the current divorce rate at around 50% and climbing? (correct me if I'm wrong here, though)

NOT using the Bible, or other religious reasons, give me a good reason why two people of the same gender should not be allowed to marry.

If I can't find a non religious reason that still doesn't mean I have to agree to accept it would it? My parents would try to prove me otherwise if I did

It's your opinion, if you feel you should oppose gay marriage because it goes against your faith then that's fine.

I've been actually looking for a sound non-religious reason against gay marriage, but I can't find any.

If one props up, it still won't change my mind, I don't see why a lack of one would change the minds of those who oppose gay marriage

No, CD, you don't have to agree with anything that goes against your beliefs, though another's right to believe differently should be respected. My mom has tried to prove me wrong on many things, but that doesn't mean either of us changed our views or respected one another any less. Same goes for other people.

CD, Christianity plays a large role in your life, and I think everyone knows, understands, and accepts that it does. It provides a basis for your moral and spiritual beliefs. Homosexuality is certainly not approved of in the Bible, so it's okay that you don't agree with it. But the fact is, it still exists, and it's something you'll have to accept, whether you like it or not. Not necessarily accept as in think it's okay, because I don't want to force my beliefs on anyone, but accept as in come to terms with its existence.

Now, we'd have a problem if you were some radical "Christian" extremist bent on annihilating anyone whose beliefs conflicted with yours, but I don't think anyone has to worry about that. Smile

I've honestly never met anyone like that over the internet.

The people at Landover Baptist Church don't really count as that site is a parody, and the forum is for people to "join in"...
