"Take me to the Brig. I want to see the "real Marines"."
Major General Chesty Puller, USMC - while on a Battalion inspection.

"We're surrounded. That simplifies the problem!"
- Lewis B. "Chesty" Puller, USMC
When the Marines were cut off behind enemy lines and the Army had written the 1st Marine Division off as being lost because they were surrounded by 22 enemy divisions. The Marines made it out inflicting the highest casualty ratio on an enemy in history and destroying 7 entire enemy divisions in the process. An enemy division is 16500+ men while a Marine division is 12500 men.

When an Army captain asked him for the direction of the line of retreat,
Col Puller called his Tank Commander, gave them the Army position, and ordered: "If they start to pull back from that line, even one foot, I want you to open fire on them."
Turning to the captain, he replied "Does that answer your question? We're here to fight."
- Lewis "Chesty" Puller at Koto-ri in Korea

Semper Fi, Chesty. Good night, wherever you are...

The best portion of a good man's life:
His little, nameless, unremembered acts of kindness and of love.

If God lived on earth, people would break his windows.

History is indeed little more than the register of the crimes, follies and misfortunes of mankind.

There are a terrible lot of lies going around the world, and the worst of it is half of them are true.

I want to find a voracious, small-minded predator and name it after the IRS.

Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but the thing dies in the process and the innards are discouraging to any but the pure scientific mind.

Women need a reason to have sex. Men just need a place.

It is well that war is so terrible, or we should grow too fond of it.

And for DarkDragon: Some people spend an entire lifetime wondering if they made a difference. The Marines don't have that problem.

DarkDragon, was that a real event? Anyway, such events are possible, and such things DID happen. There is a saying: no lion is dangerous like an injured lion. When an enemy is surrounded and has nowhere to escape, he will fight with all his might and skills, because he has nothing to lose.

There is the most glorious battle in Croatian history, the battle of Kiseg ( a town in Hungary, Hungarian name is Koeszeg), in 1532. Croatian forces, made of 700 people, confronted the army of the Ottoman (Turkish) Empire, which counted 140 000 soldiers, (200:1 for Turkey!) under the command of the sultan himself. The real target of sultan's forces was Vienna, the capital of the Habsburg Monarchy (Austria, Hungary, Croatia and Czech nad Slovak lands were rounded up in one country at the time, under the Habsburg family) , but Kiseg stood in the way. The Turks charged on Kiseg 12 times, and the defenders drove them off 12 times.

When the order was given to charge for the 13th time, the Turks, instead of charging, started running in a another direction. They were demoralized and discouraged by such Croatian resistance. When the sultan realised that he is losing control over his forces, he ordered them to retreat. That army never reached Vienna. The battle ended with thousands of dead Turks, and 300 dead Croatians.

Croatians say the defenders of Kiseg were in God's mercy, the Turks say Satan himself came to help Croatians stop the army of Allah.

So I don't find the victory of the Marine division unusual.

Yes, it was a real event. There are other versions of the quote out there, such as: "All right, they're on our left, they're on our right, they're in front of us, they're behind us...the B*****s can't get away this time!"

Now that the history lesson is over, let's get more qoutes.

Marines Never Die -- They just go to Hell and regroup

The difficult we do immediately. The impossible takes a little while longer. - U.S. Navy Seabees

And on the Seventh Day when GOD rested,
We overran His perimeter and stole the globe,
And we've been running the show ever since
-USMC

Procrastinate now, don't put it off.

"This 'telephone' has too many shortcomings to be seriously considered as a means of communication. The device is inherently of no value to us." -- Western Union internal memo, 1876.

"Drill for oil? You mean drill into the ground to try and find oil? You're crazy." -- Drillers whom Edwin L. Drake tried to enlist in his project to drill for oil in 1859.

Pull the pin and count to what?

"Some people say that I must be a terrible person, but it’s not true. I have the heart of a young boy in a jar on my desk" -Stephen King Shock

"They're a bit like chicken fillets really. You can hit people with them!" -talking about her temporary breast implants for Pirates - Keira Knightley

I cannot for the life of me understand why small children take so long to grow up. I think they do it to deliberately annoy me.
