(this is going to sound cynical I know but)
In my case I can say I use various video games for various reason...
Shooting games: I've been told these makes us better killers. As someone who has had to shoot at something before I'd like to say it doesn't. nor does it improve your aim. Actually the only reason I play shooters is to relieve stress.
Racing: Don't play
sports:Prefer the real thing
RPG:I study the game dynamics, graph interaction, sounds, movement etc...
Platform/action: 2 reason. solving puzzles hones my logic. As to the other similar to RPG but rather I look into solely the graphics.
RTS(Real time Strategy): My teachers gave me the nickname master of strategy for a reason...I hate the predicability of the CPU but planning online allows for a brain exercises on problem solving _________________ The impossible is only impossible as long as the possible has yet to be proven possible

I think violence in games is only making one violent in real life if they are already highly affecable to it. media need action and drama to get people to read/watch them, so they boast this idea
I myself am now 13, I grew up with the most violent games (even watched my brother play things like doom 3), yet I am not violent at all, ie:
I was at school one time and I was going to go home and somebody was standing in the way. I went around him but he blocked me and pushed me, I pushed back, then he punched me (not too hard but still) and I did nothing back. actually, I find it pretty annoying that I tend not to defend myself when in physical situations (went a little off topic =P) |

The two aren't exactly a direct correlation. You've got two statements A) he plays video games all the time, B) he's dumb. You don't know that he's dumb because he plays video games, and you're only basing this off of one person. If playing video games that much really made you stupid, I sure wouldn't be pursuing my current degree, and my brother would be a mental vegetable (literally) by now. _________________ "People who are easily offended need to be offended more often."

Though since this is a debate thread, the question then becomes: Can you back either of those opinions up? _________________ To win against an opponent stronger than yourself, you must not be weaker than that opponent. - Takamachi Nanoha |

He's probably not dumb, just lazy.
I actually think most video games actually train your brain, just not as school dictates. Many games, like the Zelda and Mario franchises, require you to solve many puzzles through creative means thus helping to increase your ability to strategise. And then there are those like Brain Age whose very names explain themselves. (not to mention you become a pretty good critic after you play and are disappointed by so many bad games) _________________ Live simply, so that others may simply live.
