This guy is one of the more well know dragons today. The Red Dragon of Wales. Buried for centuries under Dinas Emrys by King Lludd (in the legend of Lludd and Llevelys), he was awoken by Merlin (in the legend of Merlin (you don't say!!!)) and now lives in Lake Bala (according to local legends). What does anyone else know about Y Ddraig Goch?
Apparantly he saved Britain by killing a rival Black Dragon that he started fighting before Lludd captured them both (by getting them drunk ) before he killed his foe when he was eventually released.
By the way, to pronounce the name, the Dd is pronounced as if it was a 'v' or 'th'. |

| That sounds interesting. Would you like to write an article about it? Here on SDB we have a library about dragons, and we're it expanding all the time. My articles are on their way of being published. I'm sure yours and everybody else's would be welcome too. |

My favorite legend.
I have always liked the tale of Vortigern, Ddraig Goch and Gwiber. (the white dragon)
As was mentioned Ddraig Goch is pronounced E Thrair Go
I also like the tale of Lludd and Lyvelys and i also thought the dragon from that tale was Ddraig Goch though i can find no written evidence. Do you have any?
The tale was originally with King Vortigern or (Gwrtheyrn in Welsh) and the role played by Merlin was originally a boy named Emrys (to which the fort was named after)
Later the tale was changed and Vortigern became King Authur and Emrys became merlin. |
