| @Aurelia: The clean man was sitting opposite a mirror, and when the train went through the tunnel, dust and dirt flew in from the window and collected on the mirror. The real man went to wash his face, but when he got back, the mirror was still dirty, giving the image of one clean-faced man and one dirty-faced man. |

The answer to mine is: There is no mirror in the carriage so the clean faced man sees the dirty faced man and thinks he too is dirty so goes to wash. The dirty faced man sees the other man is clean and thinks he is also clean so he doesn't wash.
