See? I'm rubbish at riddles but i'll keep trying! Now for dragonmancer's...
You fill the four litre one up to the top and then the 3 litre one with 1 litre then tip them at the same time. I know i've got it wrong.    |

Omg! starwing you are soooo close. my only citicism (sorry about the spelling) is that how can you fill the three litre with exactly 1 litre of water with out some sort of measuring device?
(maybe I should explain that these are plain jugs, no markings on them at all)

I think what Starwing meant was that you fill the four L jug, then fill up th 3 L jug using the 4 L jug. When the 3 L jug is full, what remains in the 4 L jug will be 1 L. Pour than into the container, then refill the 4 L jug, and pour that into the container as well. 1 L + 4 L = 5 L.
