I live in the Caribbean and grew up on tales told from my grandparents, who were told by their grandparents about a very ancient guardian of the forest, protector of the trees and all the animals within called Papa Bois. Papa Bois is a shape shifter that appears in many forms. When any unfortunate hunter goes into the forest to kill animals, Papa Bois would change into a deer and lead the hunter deeper and deeper into the forest until he got lost and shape shift into a cloven hoofed, half deer half other kind of creature who warns the hunter not to hunt in his forest and sends him on his way unharmed or allows the hunter to pay some kind of toll to leave his forest in good health. This toll usually involved marriage to Mama Dlo who was a giant serpent creature with a very nasty temper who was guardian of the lakes and surrounding area. Not a good creature is Mama Dlo. I've always been fascinated by the guardian role in these stories since the creatures (dragons?) were never out to hurt humans until the humans trespassed.

I <3 these kinds of stories, of something dark and spooky living in some part of the wilderness that no one's supposed to visit, and of the different manners whatever resident "monster" might have of booting invaders out. Very Happy It would be so much more fun to scare someone away than harm them.

stories like that one are often made up based on something true.
like for instance, china believes in serpent entities because they found remains of dinosaurs. china is full of them. not that dragons dont exist :P
or the native american indians, they used to believe in dragons or something close to one because there was artifacts, relics, paintings that depicts a serpent with a head very similar to a dinosaur's.

I also love to hear these stories and what people have grown up with over there times and what they have been told by relations/close friends etc.

I agree with RamenDemon about all these things though.

This is what i find in some cases true, though right now i am just slightly too lazy to search up and produce any evidence as with those below.

Can you produce evidence for us to read up on?
Though this i agree with in many ways, though. It is still incredably nice to hear stories passed on, to see what they create and such, seeing as China always beholds such spectaculer art work.

Same with this, though, we can never be sure in this world of evalution that so luckily belongs to all of us. Though Science (me being a strong believer) has proved many things, there are still some pieces that are missing. (Again, much too lazy right now to search and produce evidence).

But none-the-less o have heard many of these tails myself, i've also had some fascination about the guardians in these stories. Smile
