What in the world is the deal here? Why is it that people in prisons live far better than most American citizens??? It makes ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE!!!!! I mean, inmates have cable tv, 3 full meals a day, gobs of books to read. They can obtain collage degrees for FREE! They have gyms, ball fields, computers... They have NO bills to pay.... They don't even HAVE to work. Its an option... Where is the sense in this? People who abide by the law are starving or barely scraping by working 2 jobs, they don't have cable, any form of exciercise equipment.... They don't eat 3 meals a day because they can't afford it. They have all these bills they have to pay just to have a roof over their heads.... Its no wonder America's prisons are crammed so full.... All you have to do is kill someone or rob a bank and you're living the good life! For those of you who are of the opinion that prisoners should have every right to these luxuries I ask you tis.: Would you feel the same if the prisoner murdered someone in your family, one of your friends; robbed you of all your money...??? Would you still want them to live like they were rich???
Somewhere over-saes they have prisons where the inmates must work for everything they get.... I feel the same should apply here in America. Over-seas, if they don't work, they don't eat! And to beat it all, WE are the ones paying for the inmates to live such lush lives!!!
Its pretty sad when all you have to do to live like a king is kill someone...

They don't.

Bureau of Prisons spokeswoman Traci Billingsley said cable, satellite TV and rental videos are available in federal prison, but inmates pay for these services from trust accounts that include proceeds from vending machines, cafeterias, and money received from relatives.

To deprive them of food would bring forth the wrath of SCOTUS. Decent food, certainly, but also nothing spectacular.

Haven't been able to find much on this, though I really don't mind that.

Sometimes, though research has shown that education helps lower the recidivism rate of released inmates.

Not always, I think, and in any case, giving them a space to work off energy instead of letting it build up seems to be a wiser course of action.

Haven't been able to confirm this, but it makes sense. At least, no bills with regard to their incarceration, anyway.

Work in prison? Aside from hard labor, there's not much else they can do.

This sounds more like advocating an increase in welfare than something on prisons. The other difference, though, is that prisoners are specifically in state custody, whereas other citizens are not.

If you don't mind losing virtually all your rights and freedoms, sure.

First, I'd like to think that I'd be able to stick to principles and not let negative emotions affect that decision. Second, they're not living like they're rich.

In the US, we have this thing called the Eighth Amendment, which forbids cruel and unusual punishment. The withholding of food and drink falls under that.

If living in a box most of the time, unable to go anywhere, being fed mediocre food is your idea of living like a king, I think I'll pass on that.

on one hand, I think america should treat their prisoners without luxoury, but on the other hand, they're still human beings

I don’t agree with the inner content of what you are saying. People in prisons do not live far better than most other citizens. A precious right has been taken away from them: the right to be free.

Society has taken their freedom as a payment for what they have done. It is only civilized to treat them well after depriving them of that fundamental right. What society would we be if we would allow ourselves to treat our prisoners inhumane? We would loose the the right to call ourselves civilized.

But I suppose that is not what you are saying, I guess you are saying they do not deserve such an human treatment.

And that is where strongly start disagreeing with what you are saying. Those of whom we have taken away their freedom do deserve a human treatment because I want to be able to keep on calling the society in which I live a civilized one. It is one of my fundamental principles too.

And, yes, I truly hope I will still feel the same if the prisoner murdered someone in my family. I would hate it if that would take away my humanity. And treating our prisoners well will give those humans a change to become members of our society again in the future too. And when they do, I wish them to not feel much hate towards the system that has placed them temporarily out of society.

I think the bigger problem at hand is rather that prisoners who are released don't remember how to take care of themselves anymore. It's hard for them to get jobs because many employers won't hire someone who was in prison (unless they were released due to being proven innocent later or something) and so they just give up. Granted, this is slightly older but... It gives you an idea of what I'm talking about. http://www.strengthtech.com/correct/laws/federal/luxurypr.htm#feb9
Take a look at the things that inmates have (or did have) also, inmates are getting cell phones now as well! Granted things have changed a bit, but still inmates live better than a lot of law-abiding citizens!

Indeed. One must not take his words lightly, for they are not said such.

Not better than anyone I've seen, except for a few homeless people. I'd further my argument by saying that many inmates unfortunately wind up living better than they do OUTSIDE of prison.
