Indeed, since no one said the world was going to end. Even the worst-case scenarios don't say that. Saying that major parts of the coast will flood and that habitable areas will shrink isn't the same as saying the world will end.

Um...no. The year 2000 would have set computers without four-digit year codes to 1900. If it happened to government, bank, or other critical computers, problems could have and did occur. Certainly not to the degree that some of the people panicking about it were predicting, but they did occur. _________________ To win against an opponent stronger than yourself, you must not be weaker than that opponent. - Takamachi Nanoha |

i have no evidence to back up my statement soo here goes:
i think earth can cope with anything, despite us silly frivolous humans messing everyone up. all it has to do is outlive us all. earth outlived the dinosaurs, which lived hundreds of times longer than us. Already, we are dooming ourselves into extinction. earth arent affected by someone on the surface but what if someone trully damages her directly?. what can spell total disaster for us all and earth is if earth dies.
we live on earth and if we continue to abuse her hospitality, she will collapse and take us with her into oblivion.earth is the base, the ground where all life are supported upon. if earth isnt going to be treated well
i guess humans are looking at a dark future.. _________________ Really, you should know better than steal a bowl of ramen from a Dragon.. *slu-u-u-rp* |

| I think that global warming was going to happen anyway because every once in a while the earth just goes into a state of madness (ice age, dinosaurs). i think humans have just speeded up the process and will make it worse than what would of happened anyway. |

A reduction in worldwide population, perhaps, but outright extinction seems unlikely.

That is indeed part of it, but the simple fact that the rates of change are so great right now is what gives credence to the hypothesis that it is the actions of man that are either making it worse (i.e. larger increase than would otherwise happen) or speeding it up (same increase over a shorter time span) or both. _________________ To win against an opponent stronger than yourself, you must not be weaker than that opponent. - Takamachi Nanoha |

won't some guy start off WWIII and we just rapidly speed up ourselves on the path of inevitable extincition considering that we have pretty big weapons? some foreign nations have some doomsday weapons in their backyards. that way global warming and/or potential ice age and/or rise of the (name any animals) revolution, and/or etc wont kill us all first. _________________ Really, you should know better than steal a bowl of ramen from a Dragon.. *slu-u-u-rp* |

Just because both sides have large weapons doesn't mean that they will be used. MAD psychology still applies.

All of which are unlikely to even wipe out a sizable fraction of the human population. _________________ To win against an opponent stronger than yourself, you must not be weaker than that opponent. - Takamachi Nanoha |

This actually is my hope. But Master and I worry that there might be developed a weapon strong enough to literally destroy the planet itself, and if the whole Earth were reduced to a cloud of scattered dust then life would never return. _________________ The statement below this one is false.

Unless large antimatter weapons are developed, that is unlikely in the highest degree. The asteroid impact which took out the dinosaurs, was, if I remember correctly, more destructive than the entire nuclear arsenal of every country in the world put together, and even then, left only a (admittedly, very large) crater. _________________ To win against an opponent stronger than yourself, you must not be weaker than that opponent. - Takamachi Nanoha |
