halogens are known to be highly reactive and in the dragon's mouths (or in some areas) could produce a pure substance or compound to react with another element, thus creating the desired result and not harming the dragon itself. however, halogens are possibly too reactive it would kill the dragons. ugh chemistry apathy attack. _________________ Really, you should know better than steal a bowl of ramen from a Dragon.. *slu-u-u-rp* |

I suppose when they eat, they produce methane and have a somekind pump that leads it the mouth, then the spark pouch makes sparks and makes fire. _________________ Beware. I bite! |

aA spark puch? Thats a first. I still stand by my personal viable theory that is near, if not exact, to the dragons from the movie Reign of Fire. Natural napalm caused by a mixture of two harmless substances, but when mixed ignite into an inferno. _________________ I am trapped between heaven and hell. My wings carry me upon the winds. That sounds alot like the Bombardier beetle, only they don't spray fire, though the mixture they spray does get realy hot some of it even flash boils as it is expelled. It burns, and stinks though.
Though in my belief the whole dragons breathing fire could simply be somthing of an exageration. I do not believe zahz breathed fire.admidtily I could be wrong, though none of what I believe are likly past life memories ever hinted as such a thin.
Zahz I believe may have been venomious, or spit some sort of acid, or nasty semi gasious stuff. which is not too excessivly outragious consdering what some creatuer inthis world in this day and age can do.
Vultures use their stomach acid as a defence mechnism. Vulture stomach acid is chemicaly not all that different from ours, just much much more concetrated than normal for a human.
Cobras can spit their venom, and I do believe it is potent enough to blind.
And then there are creatures like skunks...
Suffice to say it would be fairly easy to exagerate any of the above choices, if you were hit with it directly. _________________ say hello! at zahz's keep;P |

A second hypothesis is stored methane. That does, however, still leave the issue of a sparking mechanism, which I've never really been able to figure out. |
I think there was something in that discovery special about chewing on flint stones...or something. That would still leave, if they had any on hand (or in mouth in this case), that it could actually be stricken together in that saliva drenched place, and that their whole mouth didn't go up in flames too.
The only way I could see to avoid the last part would be to have something coming out of the nostrals seperate from the mouth so the combination would be away from anything internal. Imagine some of that accidentally being swallowed before it ignited... |
I have heard of where they would go and find flint and steel, swallow it, and it falls in two pouches in the throat. They then can remotely hit/scrape them together and create sparks. They also spit a flammable venom. Combine them and use your imagination. |

| Sparks don't last long so any igniting would happen *in* the dragon... which is a bad idea all around. Also, internal pouches and sacs tend to be *moist* which would hamper the process as well. |

I still stand by my theory of the "reign of fire" style of the sets of glands that eject two non-volatile chemicals that ignite when mixed. _________________ I am trapped between heaven and hell.
