There are many chemicals that mix and cause flames, there are some gases to, so there is a high possibility that it could work.

Sodium as a fire source seems unlikely, at best. The dragon would need to keep pure solid sodium stored in its body, away from any body fluids, regurgitate the sodium onto its target and then hit it with water. There are simply too many unfeasible things involved.

My hypothesis is more along the lines of the bombardier beetle's defensive mechanism. Two fluids which do occur in the body are stored in different sacs, and when combined, react to create a boiling liquid. It's technically not fire, but I doubt the target would care much for the exact details.

A second hypothesis is stored methane. That does, however, still leave the issue of a sparking mechanism, which I've never really been able to figure out.

i didn't mean for sodium and water to be my explanation for a dragon breathing fire, i was just giving an example or 2 substances that causes a fire, my main though of fire breathing is 2 liquids hat causes fire, bu i'm no sure which two.

Strontium is used in fireworks because when strontium salts are burned, they give off a brilliant red (or crimson) color, not necessarily because it is reactive. In its pure form, however, it is highly reactive with water, but needs special care to prevent it from reacting (nonviolently) with oxygen in the air.

I think there was something in that discovery special about chewing on flint stones...or something. That would still leave, if they had any on hand (or in mouth in this case), that it could actually be stricken together in that saliva drenched place, and that their whole mouth didn't go up in flames too.

The only way I could see to avoid the last part would be to have something coming out of the nostrals seperate from the mouth so the combination would be away from anything internal. Imagine some of that accidentally being swallowed before it ignited...

I'd open my mouth, open a valve SOMEWHERE in there (I don't know and Master doesn't remember because he never thought about it much) and air exploded. That's all I knew. I primarily used this to heat fish; my other meals I preferred raw because they were warm-blooded.
