I would think a dragon would live where ever it dang well pleased.
Some dragons were bound by others to serve/protect and so I can see dragons in castles being in that situation since castles were typically built as fortresses not as homes. But, hey abandoned castles (or castles emptied of their residents via a dragon) would make good booty and a pre-made cache for your stuff.
I suppose it depends on the type of dragon. If you think of dragons as natural creatures (meaning not on the astral plane or spiritual beings) then I'd see them in diverse habitats. But if you view them as spirits who do not live on our plane then you'd have to visit the astral plane to know them and where they live.
For my own kind, I prefer cool, dry places like mountains and pine forests. _________________ The one and only Book Wyrm! |

Were I in my previous body I'd dwell someplace woodsy. Tree branches were actually strong enough to support me if I rested on a whole bunch at once. I could slink around by slithering through a forest canopy rather than flying, and I blended in perfectly except in the winter. _________________ The statement below this one is false.

Well I can't speak for kin but going by mythology it depends on the climate and the culture.
I notice that england they tend to dwell in the water or in woods.
In China they tend to dwell in the sea or in rivers, or for some under mountains.
In Norse mythology in caves on high places or under the ground.
What do you think? |

| My species were grass-land/open plains dwellers. We had the same coloring as the grassoids there, and would either hunt in, or fly above, it. The coloring was both to keep prey from seeing us, and to keep our predator from seeing us. |

I've wondered what it'd have been like to slink around in tall grass.
Did prey and predators (two separate questions here obviously) travel by air or did they mostly stick to the ground? _________________ The statement below this one is false.

| Our prey was typically ground based, as was our predator. I think *we* evolved flight as a way to escape predators, and ended up fairly large. We did spend most of our time on the ground though. The predator-thing was... kinda bear-like (only not), but just imagine a heavier, 6-limbed and non-furred grizzly. Ambush predators mainly for them. The shinoar were more cat-like in the form of relatively short chases. Prey ranged from heavy grazers to small darty-things in the grass... and the fish-things in the river (I preferred to eat those, actually. O_o). I don't remember too much else about the fauna. There were small flittery bugs and "birds" and whatnot, but I couldn't hope to actually describe them. |
