sorry for the sudden topic but i just watched GI Jane and it's pretty good.
it's about a politicial war on whether females should be allowed on the battlefield and a woman is recruited as a test case. and wins.
do you think females should be on the field and can you back your statements up?

I've never even understood why they SHOULDN'T be, though I've heard arguments to that effect. The sexist reasons stated have only made me scratch my head though. The only thing I've heard that only deserved a glance was the statement that “men can do things that women can't do,” but the very simple counterargument is that the reverse is true also.
Words of wisdom from my favorite comic strip:

Calvin: You? Hah! War is a manly art!
Susie: I suppose anything so idiotic would have to be. Can I join in your water balloon fight or not?

Touche.

really, i think women should be allowed. it's their decisions, not anyone else's.

then again, it could be. all they have to do is slap a law on the board and no-one can argue. at least, they dont want to. it's a sexist thing.

and may I ask what sex makes the laws. in Britain the majority is male that makes our laws, not many women in parliament.

There have been warrior women and fighting women in other cultures for centuries. The Nordic women were just as fierce as the men. The story of the Iceni Queen (Bodacia) sp? is awesome.

I see no reason why women cannot fight in the military. The only reason I see for keeping them out are outdated notions of gender roles and ones place in society.

And suppose the reason was, "Well, its because we care so much about our women and respect them so much that we ban you from military service."

Really? You care for me so much that you deprive me of my right to choose for myself? Typical of those who want to control you. "It's really for you own good and because we care about you."

Gufaw...grr

Can they hold a gun, march, shoot and otherwise do the job as well as their male counterparts? If yes, then allow them do do as they wish.

If some roles require higher levels of physical ability (one of the arguments that I remember hearing was that women were, in general, weaker than men), then set strength or endurance criteria instead of gender ones.

I'm sorry to piss you all off but..... I spent 6 years in the military and yes women have a place in the military but not in a fox hole next to me. Here are my reasons:
1. Women are not as strong as men. Some are close but they don't join the military..
2. Men have a tendency to get emotionally involved with women without looking at the bigger picture. Loss of one sometimes outweighs loosing many....
3. Women can't stay in the field as long and stay healthy due to their monthly periods.
4. Women are less likely to kill first then ask questions later. I wouldn't want that to be on their minds while sharing a fox hole.

I am not against women in the military so don't call me a pig.... In war Winning is the only thing.....

There's no woman as strong as any given man in the military? If strength is an issue, why not make that the test, instead of gender?

So because men have poor impulse control (something which I simply don't buy), women shouldn't be allowed?

Look at the way battles are done these days. What field? Operating out of bases all the time?

Foxholes went out sometime in WWII. And honestly, speaking as a civilian, I'd rather have soldiers who actually thought about what they were shooting instead of spraying bullets everywhere.
