I agree with baiting the hook but I don't agree of that object missing if you don't catch the right person. So my suggestion is as follows:
Read up on psychological behaviors, preferably then ones that can tell if the person is lying their cans off... "AKA: criminal behavior"
Then have your friends read the same thing and start interrogating them. If the person starts to look to the left "your right" that person is lying, but ask them what their favorite color is first and see if those eyes go to your left, their right. now ask the person to put their hands on the table leaning into the table and watch their hands... If those hands start to tremble, sweat, change a different shade of color, that person is under stress and you have reason to believe that person is hiding something.
Also look at the legs and feet of the person if those limbs start to continuously move like that person has to use the bathroom, then that person is under stress.
Also look at the persons expressions on their face, if they try to make long pauses like, "well... I .... was a bit busy..." and so on then that person is actually making up a story.
You could also try to make a surveillance camera out of a normal camera and do the bait thing with the camera focused on the object.
Well those are my suggestions. Good luck.

| You might be able to use this, if you're already certain about who did it. I think it's only fair to add that this is only a tool in criminal interrogation, and that it's definitely not to be used as a way to find out who did it. It's a method that is not 100% accurate. |

I doubt, however, that you'd get administration approval to start interrogating students. _________________ To win against an opponent stronger than yourself, you must not be weaker than that opponent. - Takamachi Nanoha |

I thought that she or he was a student and could be classified as a normal student exchange in words. Besides, the students have the right to talk freely with others if they wish don't they? I might be wrong. _________________ forever shall i be a dragon friend even though i have not met one. forever let the dragons live free |

In my experience with public school systems, students do not have a right to their own private lives outside school, no. So if the System wants to start rummaging around in someone else's things then it can do so. The thing is though that the System still needs a motive to WANT to do that. _________________ The statement below this one is false.

Well, in the school's note books it never said anything saying that they are not responsible for lost or stolen articles, so technically it means that they have to look into the crime. I say, unless other wise stated in the note book for the students.
It also doesn't state that there will be a act of investigation against each student to technically they still can do it, like the student council or the clubs. All they have to do is get written permission from the principle and have it done. The principle can not deny the permission because of the stolen articles of the school, especially if it was part of the schools education back ground. _________________ forever shall i be a dragon friend even though i have not met one. forever let the dragons live free |

Also I recommend using a trick I learned and used...
Bait (yes bait) something that looks like it MIGHT color your hands (stuff leaking out) then announce that the 'stolen' electronic is leaking out dye and the only stuff that can take the color off is in the nurse's office by the general broadcast speaker (y'know, the one princips use for announcements) then hide in the nurse's office, wait 'till the perp finds the stuff then catch him red-handed (literally, the 'antidote' is a red dye )
