Well this a legends that i like because its in my neck of the woods.
Well the legend goes that on a december full moon, once every seven years, the great dragon of whitby nothwise none as the Whitby wyrm returns to try and claw Whitby Abbey into the sea. It is said that a while after the dragon has vistied a smell of burning coal can be smelled in the cold sea air as the fires which arrive when the dragon has visited scortch the jet (a black gem type rock Whitby is famous for) filled shoreline. Nobody really knows why this otherwise quite beast tries to pull the Abbey into the sea, but some jet collecters believe the wyrm is a sign of properity as the dragon has the effect of loosening new jet for the cliffs which is then quickly collected. It is also said that if someone looks straight into the jet black eyes of the wyrm and see's his reflection in them he will become immortal.
Not many people i talk to know this legend and i have always liked it and i thought i would pass it no. |

Interesting myth.
I have never heard of that dragon. Found out it is a beloved gothic symbol but I have not found information on the dragon. The White Abbey, is that a church? If so, the dragon could be a symbol to tear a 'religious symbol' down, picturing the dragon as chaos. But I'm only guessing.
albvan, what are your thoughts on this dragon myth? _________________ - power is gained through wisdom - |

Wow what a superb legend. It's a shame few people know of it. I certainly didn't. Where abouts is Whitby? I would love to know more
Do you know of any written material where someone like myself could look into it? |
