Here is a puzzle that Auroara came up with. It is something that was done before. She figured it out then asked me. I don't know she's not telling. So I will put it here to see if any one can figure it out.
Okay here goes.
Heat-----Water-----Electricity
- --------- ------ ----
^---------^---------^
House1 House2 House3
Connect Heat, water, and electricity to all three of the houses.
With out crossing the lines. They must link indavidually.
Meaning you can't solve this with a Rectangle. It helps to draw three bubbles on a sheet of paper. Start by Marking H W E So one bubble has H one has W, and the last has E
Then draw three boxes underneath them with a triangle on top. The houses should be parrallel to the three components. Then began trying to solve this puzzle. Good luck. _________________ The blood of that which you beleive run deep within, if you feel this then there is no need to doubt.

The lines cannot cross each other, but can they pass under/through a house so long as they do not cross other utility lines? _________________ Rawr.

The lines have to directly link to each house. That is what makes this puzzle so hard. Because there is only one possible answer and as I said this is something Auroara came up with. I've been working on this for a year. I've yet to come up with anything.
I challenge anyone who has the ability to figure out this most complex of puzzles. _________________ The blood of that which you beleive run deep within, if you feel this then there is no need to doubt. |

If there's no trick to it (like running the lines through a house), then I'm pretty sure there is no solution to the problem. Unless it isn't confined to the two-dimensional surface of a piece of paper. In 3-D, of course, it is easy. _________________ To the moon!

How would it be done in 3-D?
Would it be the same as 2-D
I've been working on this for
a year and I've yet to come up with anything.
That's why I put it here. As I want to use this puzzle against
other people who think they are so smart. If you know what I mean. _________________ The blood of that which you beleive run deep within, if you feel this then there is no need to doubt. |

I spent months in highschool many years ago trying to figure out the solution to a similar problem. I never figure out a solution that didn't require either playing 3D or running through the other houses. _________________ "People who are easily offended need to be offended more often."

I was planning on a 3-D approach, myself. Aside from what Raya said, though, I don't see a 2-D solution.
dragonwriter: if it's done in 3-D, the lines can overlap, as long as their elevations are different. e.g. water travels at surface level, heat travels underground, and power goes overhead. _________________ To win against an opponent stronger than yourself, you must not be weaker than that opponent. - Takamachi Nanoha |

As Ragnarok said, for it to work in 3-D, all you have to do is run the lines at different heights, as they do in real-world constructions.
For it to work in 2D, you have to run at least one of the lines through a house. One solution is shown below:
I think this is cheating, though it depends on the exact wording of the original question. If this isn't prohibited in the rules, then it could be a solution. _________________ To the moon!
