As it says what are they for. Are they for attracting mates, are they for asserting their domanencre. Are they weapons? What do you think they are for? _________________ never again will i look back in vain

I think that the horns were there for two major reasons. One is that they help aid in deterring enemies and possible predators (if there were any) for they can look rather scary at times. Second is that beings that they are most often pointed, it provides less areas for an enemie to swipe at for if they hit one of the horns they'll end up impailing whatever they used to swipe at him/her with.
So in short, added protection. _________________ I am trapped between heaven and hell. My wings carry me upon the winds. Above lies heaven, below hell. Yet I must land in hell to soar in heaven. I am a Dragon! |

The shinoar used our horns to protect our necks, for display, and to hear. |

I'm going to have to go with goldendragon on this one. On another note he needs to get some capital letters in his name, ASAP. :P
Horns are a very good offensive weapon. I don't know about defense, but they are a very, very good offensive weapon. Ever seen a rhino? Yeah. I think that it is used for "deterring" enemies and, if there WERE any, predators. But I think it was more useful for rending flesh, since it was much longer than claws or fangs. Depending on the size of the dragon, you could take down a horse with one of those things. Save the talons for the little prey like people. :P This is assuming they existed on a planet like ours with similar animals and such, but with physics that let them fly. Perhaps less gravity... a smaller planet would make it a bit more plausible for them to fly. Anyway, that's my take on the horns. Assuming all else (meaning the dragons themselves) to be true, they're probably mainly offensive weapons. _________________ Happy Fourth of July everybody! The problem with using a dragon's horns for offense is that most would have to curl the chin towards the trunk, thus inhibiting vision and exposing the neck which is a very vulnerable area. So... an offensive strike unless something is on the back is not a very good idea.
Horns on most species are there first for display, second for defense. You'll note that it is primarily prey species that have horns. Deer(okay, antlers but close enough), sheep, and rhinos, etc all use it for display, then defense.
Also, I don't think horns are typically all that strong. The amount of force they would be exposed to would snap them eventually. I know that the shinoar horns were best used defensively if we had something on our backs. We could jab them to keep them away from our necks, hopefully long enough for help to arrive. |

My horns were very sturdy. It was almost impossible to break them.
I think the main use was to defend the back of my neck, which was quite soft. They weren't used that much for looks, just plain, straight, horns on the back of my head. Also, very handy to scratch some itches. |

Long horns are attractive. And often a good indication of age as well. Obviously an older dragon has been able to survive for longer, and therefore probably has good genes. Thus making him/her a good potential mate.
Horns are not so much to combat enemies, as the opposit sex ^.=.^ _________________ Prey, tell... |
