Okay, after some thought:
A sort of a rant.
May be TL:TR
This is spawned of one too many late nights, and a number of comments repeated here and there, in a few cases vocally, by members of the Furry fandom.
Otherkin and Furry are two separate, different things. No, really.
Furries, are in it because they like the art/porn, see it as a way of life, enjoy being around other like minded people, and have sex with dogs.
Well, okay, not always that last part, but it has relevance.
Otherkin are individuals, who in various manners, believe they are the reincarnated souls of various animals, some of them mythical. It is a belief system, often deeply personal, and all otherkin believe that one day they will turn into dragons and fly away.
(You see what I did there? Clever huh?)
It is becoming an increasingly common phenomenon however, especially among furries, to view otherkin as something to be looked down on. To be dismissed as people being delusional, or plain retarded.
The grounds for this are often based on the view that all Otherkin are the reincarnated spirit of the Dragon_God of the Universe or something.
Now the mistake the furries believe in, is that all who call themselves otherkin ARE 'Other-Kin'. What is often the case, is that a furry loses touch with reality, and starts hearing their fursona talking to them.
So in fact, its furries role playing as Dragon_Gods of the Universe that are being dismissed as delusional idiots. Except those delusional furries CALL themselves Otherkin, so as to be extra special.
---
What I find offensive, is when I try and explain my beliefs, I often get made fun of, or lumped together with these idiots, because of it.
I have believed what I believe for a VERY long time. My first memories 'returned' when I was in preschool, and I have spent the last two decades learning to meditate, and learn about myself spiritually. I've invested a lot of time in my belief, as much as some people invest in any 'real' religion.
I discovered other, spiritually sincere people like myself a few years ago, when I got my first computer when I was sixteen. I had been identifying myself spiritually as a 'dragon' for nearly ten years by that point.
I found a few people who believed similar things, and a small group calling themselves 'otherkin'. Wow... here was a group of people just like me!
And because some of them were ALSO interested in the furry fandom, I discovered Furry.
Wow.
(Incidentally, while I still see a few of those 'true' believers, most have utterly turned their backs on everything furry, yet still maintain their belief in Otherkin.)
Well, ten years after that, here I am. I consider myself a furry 'fan', but I am, and always will be, Other-Kin. I can leave the fandom, but I cannot leave what I believe in.
I do not (And most true otherkin also do not), believe that I will sprout wings and a tail and fly off into the sunset.
Just as most furries do not have sex with their household pets.
This is not aimed at anyone in particular. If it offends you, ask yourself why. If you didn't get the humor in there, sorry.
Please feel free to use this in discussions, just, you know, quote me, don't take all the credit.
I really wanted to say this because I believe that otherkin are being misrepresented and misunderstood by the furry community in general, and thus the world in general, because of a lack of understanding about the differences between 'Furry' and 'Otherkin'. Hopefully, this post will let those who don't understand, gain some measure OF understanding.
Thanks for reading. _________________ Prey, tell... |

Well if you don't say anything, how are people supposed to know you're other-kin? If you can manage to keep you mouth shut, people wont be able to point you out as the oddball and outsider.
And also note that yes the majority of us other-kin here on this site are predominently dragon, but you'll be amazed to find out that there are a whole lot more species of other-kin out there besides dragons. Try not to generalize so much. _________________ I am trapped between heaven and hell. My wings carry me upon the winds. Above lies heaven, below hell. Yet I must land in hell to soar in heaven. The generalization is for the sake of simplicity and surprisingly enough, humour. Sorry. ^.=.~ _________________ Prey, tell... |

Wow, over the past months I've only been seeing conflict between otherkin and... um, more otherkin. Has this mostly been happening on furry sites? _________________ The statement below this one is false.

To be quite honest, I avoid the drama threads and flame wars that occur whenever more than half a dozen people get together on the internet.
I wrote this in response to views spoken by several furry artists, and written by furries on a couple chatrooms. They were not responding to anything *I* had said, but were discussing furries in general, and inevitably, the subject of 'those freaks who forget that its just a character' comes up. And since these discussions usually occur on fast moving chatrooms, I sorta wanted to have something pre-written for me to link to and say 'Hoy, readplz, learn something maybe, and please dont be such an ass about things you have no actual knowledge of!'. I posted it here because I felt it may come in handy for some of you who may encounter similar situations. _________________ Prey, tell... |

Interesting. I for one, found it funny
But on a serious note, i understand what you are talking about. It's all down to judging, and stereotypes, but thats everywhere. When i first found out about otherkin i really didn't understand. It was like... do these people really think they are dragons?! Once i actually read a bit more into it i realised how mislead i had been. It was the same when i first encountered a 'furry'.
But anyhow, people judge. People have first impressions. Unfortunately, it happens. It's just annoying that not everybody takes the time to read a little bit more into it. _________________ â– Inquisitor Lavellan â–
