So any one else watch Life tonight on discovery, the second episode was on reptiles.

one thing I found interesting was the fact the all the reptiles around the world have something that real made them different from location to location.

also the fact that they filmed a Komodo hunt that took around 3 weeks was pretty cool to.

I watched it and definitely enjoyed it.

However, as a snake keeper... I cringed every time they called the Komodo "poisonous". No, you could eat one without coming to harm. They (and many other reptiles, including most snakes they are now discovering) are venomous.

And really they aren't so much venomous in a true sense. They produce no venom. Their mouth and teeth are fine. It's the bacteria in their saliva, with which they have a symbiotic relationship, that will kill you after getting bitten. Unless I'm mistaken, which has happened before. XP Though, to be honest, I can't think of any other name to call them but venomous, despite knowing it's not quite right.

Recent MRI-scans have shown that Komodo's do have venom glands in their lower jaws. They even extracted the glands from a terminally ill one.

Life isn't broadcasted here, my guess is (based on previous dates) that it will take about three to four years before it'll be broadcasted here. It looks very nice though, and I'll certainly watch it when I get the chance.

Actually they do. It acts, as the program sad, as an anti-coagulant. So it isn't like the hemotoxic or neurotixic venoms we're used to thinking of, but it is still a venom. They're discovering weak venoms in most snakes, and an increasing number of lizards. Garter snakes are venomous. It's just such a small amount/so weak that it doesn't harm humans at all unless you're allergic. I'm willing to bet corns are venomous too. The bit I got from a subadult itched for the entire day despite drawing pretty much no blood.

Well there we go then. :3 Like I said, "unless I'm mistaken." Good to know, though. Thanks for that. I shall log it in my memory banks. *nodnod*

The info about Komodo dragons possessing venom glands is not new I recall reading about that some time ago in one of those little blurbs in a magazine though which one I can't recall. Might have been Smithsonian or maybe Natural History.

If you think about it though a powerful anticoagulant could be very deadly as even mild ones can cause thinning of the blood sufficients enough to make internal hemoraging a possiblity.

The show like many that have been aired on discovery though does sound interesting. I'll have to see if I can dredge the show up on line, since discovery and the channels like it are some of the few channels i actualy will watch, and the show sounds interesting. thanks for the heads up on the program.
Woah 0_0 i just relized its likly been over a year since I've even bothered to look at the channel/. program listings XD. wow
