I've only started a couple weeks ago (Aug 15, 2010) and I'm not completely sure on a few things.

1) How long does it usually take to get even the slightest result?

2) About 60% of the Phantom limb experiences I've had in the past were related to music (practicing guitar, during a live stage musical perfomance etc...) So I wonder wether it would help if I listened to music during meditation, it may seem wierd and maybe doomed to fail (I dont know, i'm still new to this) but it was the cause of most of my previous experiences.

3) Do you get any visualizations during meditation, or just audio, or both?

4) Do most of your spiritual experiences come in dreams or what? (if so, I need to try to start remembering mine)

5) Thank you?

Meditation is different for everybody, so I'm sure you'll get a wide variety of advise.

My understanding of it, is that it takes as long as it takes. Ranging from several minutes / hours, to weeks or months. Thinking about it, I believe it also has to do with what you want to achieve.

Music can be a great trigger, as for phantom limbs triggered by it, you're the only person who can figure out what the circumstances were. Music has been known to help during meditation. Personally, I prefer silence, but that's just me. You could always try it, see if it works better with or without.

Visualizations? You could say that. Though sometimes it's more of a conversation with myself, it varies for me. Clearing your mind and focusing on becoming / being calm usually leads to something.

Good question, I'm wondering too when people get spiritual experiences. Deep meditation sometimes works for me, though dreams work too.

I'm quite curious what other people are going to say.

I was aiming for the fact that people will have different answers, gives me an "In the ballpark" answer.

I should probably get in the habit of remembering my dreams, just in case.

I was a little vague in the Music question, so should the music be calming for the average person, or calming for me (Calming for me is Avenged Sevenfold) Very Happy

And you didn't respond to my last question Laughing when I did that on another forum, someone responded: 5) You're welcome?

Music counts in meditation? I might have actually accidently meditated then, I have had some pretty trippy experiences just listening to music and relaxing, like I was lost inside my own head.

Go figure right?

Really it's whatever works for you. If death metal helps you feel calm, or puts you in some sort of zone, then use that!

For some people a strict by-the-book approach works best.. and for others playing music, dancing, whatever moves them, really is what works.

When I have spiritual experiences they often happen quite randomly, or when I'm in the shower letting my mind drift, or listening to certain types of music (it will change depending on my mood). Occasionally things will happen when I'm in a formal meditation (you know, sitting, focusing on my breathing, maybe holding an intention in mind). Sometimes I am actually drawn into meditation. As for dreams, they rarely seem to have anything spiritual in them, but when they do it's obvious and I remember them without even trying!

You were probably looking for a clear cut easy answer.. but the truth is that everyone works a little different, and you have to follow your intuition and what feels right.

Good luck! Smile

I will answer your questions according to my experiences. Since that seems how you posed the questions.

1.) This depends on what I am meditating on. If it is an answer to a question that my conscience mind has not been able to find. Then the results of time spent in meditation will vary. (Some answers are buried deeper or may have multiple solutions or tasks.)
If I am meditating for emotional release or strength. Not long after I have closed my senses off to the world around me and concentrated on my center do I find my emotions.

2.) A lot of my phantom limb experiences happen due to a highly emotional responses to situations that I am in. And then some are caused when I hand control over to my 'other'. If music causes highly emotional response in you... which I am betting it does... then use music during meditation. It will open up your response receptors.

3.) I get both.

4.) Most of my spiritual experiences come to me when I leave myself open to the spiritual realm. I do not interpret my life's experiences with just my 5 physical senses. But with my spirit as well.

5.) You are welcome. And thank you for listening. Happy hunting on your journey. And may it be an eventful and fruitful one!

Seemingly random. I don't know how to zero in on any "median" amount of time it takes me because there are too many factors that determine whether I even succeed or not.

Sometimes I get random flashbacks, or visions, or phantom shifts when trying to meditate. As for the aforementioned factors:
1. music I'm listening to
2. setting I'm in
3. present mood at the time I start meditating
4. last friend I talked to before starting
5. whether Hyrax is awake at the time and whether he wants to help the process along or get in the way (about 80% of the time it's the latter)

Both, random.

I'd say yes for me, but it's a bit odd for me because I can no longer distinguish between a dream and a vision, ever since an odd occurrence when I was in the 6th grade. I had a dream one night of being stuck in a large building and trying to find the exit, and even when I woke up, I was still stuck in the dream somehow. It was like some sort of double-sensory thing and very disconcerting, and took me about half the school day (amid doing classwork x.x) to get out and end the dream.
Since then I've had a few other dreams here and there that have started while I was asleep and continued onward for a couple hours afterward, but they've never been meaningful.
