Well what I find hard to differentiate at times is the difference between otherkin and furry. In my opinion my definition of otherkin is that your body is different of that of the species of your soul. A furry is someone that is physically and spiritually of that species who wants to be another kin. What gets difficult, especially for the furries who think they're otherkin, how do they tell? And how do we tell we're otherkin and not furry? (off-topic question though).

What is the difference between otherkin and furry, and when do the lines blur? An interesting question asked by Galadreyil.

In the past, many people from both the otherkin and the furry communities have looked at the other side and claimed to be radically different, and wanted nothing to do with the one of the other side.

The key difference, I think, is that the furries consider themselves human in both a physical and spiritual sense, and the otherkin see themselves as human physically, and something else in spirit. The furries are interested in anthropomorphic art, and the otherkin community on the whole is indifferent I think. (Though most people want nothing to do with anthropomorphic animals I've noticed.)

In a way, the furries like the idea of playing a character or creating characters, whereas the otherkin are non-human in a non-physical way.

But when do the lines blur? There are many otherkin who want to become what they think is their trueform. Some even roleplay it occasionally. Does this count as being a furry?

Personally, I think the otherkin and furries are different, although an otherkin can also be a furry I think.

There is definitely blur, both in concept and indeed in membership. There are 'kin who do have some interest in the art and community, and there are some furries who are have some sort of spirituality to them, usually totemic. The main difference between the two is in identifying spiritually as human or not. A created persona/fursona isn't quite the same as spiritual identification, but some might mash the two together in confusion.

On the contrary, I'd say this is an easy one and that therians would be much more harder to draw a line with. Furries are COMPLETELY separate from both when it comes to "internal workings". But I've also seen some occasional furries who seemed to show a great deal of difficulty in stepping outside of roleplay.

I wrote a rant thingy about this a long long time ago, but it may be worth reposting here, as it still (I believe) holds true.

Otherkin and Furry are two seperate, different things. No, really.

Furries, are in it because they like the art/porn, see it as a way of life, enjoy being around other like minded people, and **** dogs.

Well, okay, not always that last part, but it has relevence.

Otherkin are individuals, who in various manners, believe they are the reincarnated souls of various animals, some of them mythical. It is a belief system, often deeply personal, and all otherkin believe that one day they will turn into dragons and fly away.

(You see what I did there? Clever huh?)

It is becoming an increasingly common phenomenon however, especially among furries, to view otherkin as something to be looked down on. To be dismissed as people being delusional, or plain retarded.
The grounds for this are often based on the view that all Otherkin are the reincarnated spirit of the Dragon_God of the Universe or someshit.

Now the mistake the furries believe in, is that all who call themselves otherkin ARE 'Other-Kin'. What is often the case, is that a furry loses touch with reality, and starts hearing their fursona talking to them.

So in fact, its furries roleplaying as Dragon_Gods of the Universe that are being dismissed as delusional idiots. Except those delusional furries CALL themselves Otherkin, so as to be extra special.

---

What I find offensive, is when I try and explain my beliefs, I often get made fun of, or lumped together with these idiots, because of it.
I have believed what I believe for a VERY long time. My first memories 'returned' when I was in preschool, and I have spent the last two decades learning to meditate, and learn about myself spiritually. I've invested a lot of time in my belief, as much as some people invest in any 'real' religion.
I discovered other, spiritually sincere people like myself a few years ago, when I got my first computer when I was sixteen. I had been identifying myself spiritually as a 'dragon' for nearly ten years by that point.
I found a few people who believed similar things, and a small group calling themselves 'otherkin'. Wow... here was a group of people just like me!

And because some of them were ALSO interested in the furry fandom, I discovered Furry.

Wow.

(Incidentally, while I still see a few of those 'true' believers, most have utterly turned thier backs on everything furry, yet still maintain thier belief in Otherkin.)

Well, ten years after that, here I am. I consider myself a furry 'fan', but I am, and always will be, Other-Kin. I can leave the fandom, but I cannot leave what I believe in.

I do not (And most true otherkin also do not), believe that I will sprout wings and a tail and fly off into the sunset.
Just as most furries do not **** thier household pets.
