So, with the successful completion of the world's first nanoscale processor, what do you think will become of electronics? A wrist-watch sized computer with pico projectors? Surgical implants? What would you like to see happen with this technology? How long do you think it will take before it's used in a cat toy? _________________ "Your toast has been burned, and no amount of scraping can remove the black parts!" ~ Caboose

The one thing that comes to mind is how long now is it going to take before they make nano-implants into the human body for "improvements". How hard would it be to sneak that through? Pretty darn easy considering all ya got to do is put out that everybody should get a new immunization, and really you're getting injected with nano units to spy on us all or brainwash everyone . _________________ I am trapped between heaven and hell. I wonder what technique they used to create the architecture.. By the looks of the SEM picture, they used lithography.
This kind of thing is right up my alley. Thanks for sharing!
If they completely redesigned the architecture from the ground up, it would mean that this could change micro computing as we know it. |

Just please don't make my ipod and keypad for my phone any smaller, I don't think I'll be able to press the buttons any more . _________________ I am trapped between heaven and hell. I believe that has something to do with how difficult it is to produce. Small is difficult. |

Don't quote me on it, Namhias, but I believe I had read an article before this that was also from Harvard (among other institutes researching the same thing) explaining that they are actually essentially growing the structures. Be it from enzymes placing the materials appropriately or something like slicing out the patterns. Which relates to what Kimo had brought up. The means by which these nanocircuits will be manufactured will, in theory on the mass scale, cost significantly less to make than current silicate based electronics. These nanocircuits are likely built from graphene, or another superconducting material that was recently created by DARPA which are both as cheap or cheapER than silicon and exceedingly less resistive.
I feel your pain though, Galadreyil, media interfaces are shrinking beyond effective productivity levels. Sure, I have the thinnest smartphone in the world (iPhone 4); but I could not confidently tell you the number of times I have had a typo. Which is why I eagerly anticipate the arrival of a phone like the Mozilla Seabird. _________________ "Your toast has been burned, and no amount of scraping can remove the black parts!" ~ Caboose

I heard more or less the same thing. Nanowires can be "grown" using the Vapor-liquid-solid method, though I don't think those can be used for anything like a circuit. Not yet anyway, most definitely worth keeping an eye on.
If they ever decide to create that phone, I most definitely want one! |
