I believe in the mythical dragon of the Celts, which was not seen as good or evil but helpvol. Throughout the Celtic countries, including my own country, people prayed for the dragon to provide fertility in the earth so that crops could grow. Drawings were made from the dragon by the Druids that had much resemblance to the Oriental dragon. However, there was a problem... according to the Druids blood had to flow down to the earth so that the dragon was satisfied and the bones were buried so that the dragon could fertilize with human sacrifices. But the Druids did not see this as murder, this was the end which is connected to a new beginning hence the image of the dragon that bites its tail. It was seen as a god, but not of good or evil. As more and more people asked the fertility of the earth, they turned to the dragon of the earth that should bring a beautiful harvest. The victims were mostly murderers and thieves and a rebirth could change their mind.
The rituals are held at the end of summer, end of year, October 31st (after the harvest). A religion that is still celebrated with the name 'Halloween... but misunderstood. The name of the evening was originally the evening of Samhain. But Catholics and Christians reformed the day to 'All Hallows eve' or Hallowmas' hoping for the Celts to forget the day of the dragon and therefore they created 'All Saints day' and celebrated on November the 1st.
The appearance of the dragon has been seen for over 3000 years ago, the first where seen by druids and farmers in Western Europe. Even than the picture of a dragon was very detailed and although it is not a dinosaur, it's is similar with dinosaur, but back then they had not discovered dinosaur bones yet. For them, the dragon was a creature of the forest and the earth and stood for fertility, while the asiaten associate dragons with luck and wisdom, a creature of the afterlife.

Interesting. It strikes me how much these dragons resemble the western dragon. It could be that these myths have played a role in the forming of today's image.
Thanks for sharing! |

What I find astonishing is there's all these myths and legends, some unexplainably tie into eachother. There's numerous sightings, stories....but where are the remains? It's hard for me to imagine that countless cultures were able to all create some similar form of what we know of as dragons, without ever having interacted with eachother in past millenia, and there not have been any dragons on Earth.
There's so many things that don't add up when trying to prove or disprove dragons and their physical existance on Earth. By the extreme diversities in cultures and no interaction among other cultures yet all having similar legends and images of dragons you can't just say they never existed. On the other hand though where are the remains? Why aren't there any left alive to be seen?
Sorry about the slightly off topic rant, this kinda reminded me of a couple things. _________________ I am trapped between heaven and hell. My wings carry me upon the winds. Above lies heaven, below hell. Yet I must land in hell to soar in heaven. I am a Dragon! |

| That IS the original western dragon, Namhias. Played a role in making the myth? Yah...pretty much IS the foundation of the myth. Since Celts lived mostly in the west of Europe, thus the name western dragon. |
